Five Held for Kidnapping

BENGALURU: Kengeri police on Thursday arrested a gang of five for allegedly kidnapping an astrologer for a ransom of `5 lakh.

The accused are Girish Kumar of Thalaghattapura, Manjunath of Katriguppe, Chandrashekhar, Punit and Chandru of Kengeri. They allegedly kidnapped Nagaraju alias Naga (32), a resident of Mysuru taluk.

Police sources said Girish Kumar first made contact with Nagaraju for a puja. Nagaraju, however, referred Kumar to another astrologer, Shastri. Kumar had been told to perform a puja for good luck and he paid Shastri a handsome amount. However, Kumar’s luck did not favour him even days after the puja. Disgruntled, he hatched a plan to kidnap Nagaraju.

He called Nagaraju over the phone and introduced himself as Prakash. He said he wanted Nagaraju to perform a puja at his house in Bengaluru. Nagaraju reached the city on Tuesday. Kumar, with the help of his friends, kidnapped Nagaraju in a car  and later called his wife and older brother and demanded a `5-lakh ransom. The victim’s family filed a complaint with the Kengeri police, who traced the accused.
