BENGALURU: Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu on Friday led politicians in making a call for making Kannada as the medium of instruction in schools across Karnataka.

Speaking after inaugurating the Reach-3B Line of Namma Metro at Peenya Industry station, Naidu said, “It is the need of the hour to make the mother tongue as the medium of instruction in schools.”

It has to be Kannada in Karnataka, Telugu in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil in Tamil Nadu, he added. “I am totally in support of making the mother tongue as the medium of instruction,” he reiterated adding that, “Such a move will help us preserve our heritage.”

Union Law and Justice Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, who spoke later, echoed Naidu’s views and said, “We must make Kannada the medium of instruction in Karnataka.”

In a brief chat with reporters after the function, the CM said that during his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, he had impressed upon the need to evolve a consensus among all States so that the mother tongue can be made the medium of instruction. “There is a need for Amending Article 21 (a) to facilitate this,” he said.
