Panel Seeks More Details from Govt on Arkavathy

BENGALURU:The Justice Kempanna Commission,  constituted to probe irregularities in denotification of over 983 acres of land acquired for the Arkavathy Layout project, has sought clarifications from the Bangalore Development Agency (BDA) and the state government based on petitions received from the public.

According to official sources, the commission received over 80 memorandums from the public and is now sending notices to the state government and BDA seeking clarifications.

A senior official who is on the commission told Express that the complaints from the public relate to rejection of pleas to denotify the acquired land and delisting of certain pockets of land in violation of rules. People who were waiting for physical handover of sites allotted by the BDA have also sought the Commission’s help in ending their wait, he added.

The government and BDA have submitted documents relating to the denotification of 983 acres of Arkavathy land. “We are only verifying whether the denotifications were made as per High Court guidelines or not. The commission has powers only to verify if there any wrongdoing in the denotification. It has no power to fix responsibility on those guilty in such cases”, the source said.

To a question on whether the government had handed over all documents the Commission had sought, the official said, “It will be known only after the process of verification is over.”

It may be recalled that under pressure from the opposition BJP and JD(S), Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had constituted the judicial commission to probe charges of illegal denotification of land earmarked for the Arkavathy Layout project.

The opposition had charged that Siddaramaiah had denotified pockets of land illegally to benefit a few vested interests.
