Apartments may have to treat their sewage

BENGALURU: If the recommendations of the committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Urban Development) Mahendra Jain are accepted, sewage from apartments around Bellandur Lake entering the water body will be a thing of the past. The apartments will have to make their own arrangements to treat the sewage.

Jain told reporters on Wednesday that when K J George was Bengaluru Development Minister, he had visited Bellandur and constituted a committee to suggest short- and long-term measures to prevent foaming in the lake. “We have prepared a list of measures which will be submitted to the CM in a day or two,” he said.

Explaining further, Jain said one of the measures include completely stopping the flow of sewage from nearby apartments to the lake. “The apartments have to make their own arrangements to treat sewage water they produce. Only after certification from a nodal agency can they let water in to the lake,” he said.

Jain said they have also suggested that a fountain be set up in the lake. “The sprayed water gets exposed to oxygen and that will reduce the level of polution in the water.

Currently, 700 million liters of untreaterd water is entering the lake every day and we want to bring it down to 100 MLD by March 2017,” he said.
