School bus driver caught driving drunk

BENGALURU: ADUGODI traffic police on Friday seized a school bus after the driver was found driving under the influence of alcohol. The bus was carrying students when the police caught the vehicle.

A police officer said Somashekar, bus driver of Vivekananda International Public High School, was found driving the vehicle with more than 20 students in a reckless manner on a one-way road near City Armed Reserve headquarters in Adugodi on Hosur Road.

When Adugodi traffic police stopped the vehicle and questioned him for reckless driving, Somashekar could not speak properly.

“He was subjected to a medical test and he was found to have consumed alcohol. We have seized the vehicle and informed the school authorities. They later arranged another vehicle to carry the students to their houses,” a senior police officer said.

When contacted, Vivekananda International Public High School authorities were unavailable to comment.

However, the driver was later let off after a warning and his driving licence was also suspended.

At present, fine for drunken driving is only `2,000 under the Motor Vehicle Act. However, the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill 2016, which will be soon placed in the Parliament, has hiked it to `10,000.
