Teacher in the dock gets students' support

BENGALURU: THE alleged sexual harassment reported at the Bhagavan Mahaveer Jain Pre University College in the city has taken a twist with some students supporting the faculty member who has been suspended.

On Friday, the college management took a decision to suspend the teacher till further inquiry, after a local TV channel aired a report about a girl being harassed by her English teacher in the classroom.

A few hours after the teacher was suspended, students started extending their support to him and were also discussing the issue on their WhatsApp group. A student said, “We don’t believe in the allegations. He is among the better teachers we have come across.” Students gathered on Saturday morning to discuss the issue and about 60 of them formed a committee. “We have decided to give a representation to the principal, demanding an internal inquiry. We are sure this has been done to tarnish the teacher’s image as he had asked some students to leave the class for misbehaving,” a student said.

The committee has also decided to meet the chairperson of the State Women’s Commission.
