'Paying tax does not make an illegal property legal'

BENGALURU: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad has said they will soon upload the list of encroachers on their website, along with survey numbers.

The Commissioner, who is acting tough on the encroachers, told Express he was keen on completing the task within the stipulated time. He warned that no official or builder will be spared if found guilty.

What is the status of the demolitions?

We had identified 1,923 encroachments from all eight zones, of which 822 were cleared. In the drive that started two days ago, we have demolished more than 100 properties; some partial, some complete. Many encroached vacant sites have been taken into custody.

But these people have paid tax for years and have other documents

Paying tax does not make an illegal property legal. According to the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, construction of any structure on storm water drain is illegal.

What do you have to say about officials involvement?

We are going to take stringent action against any official who is involved directly or indirectly in this. If they are retired, we will stop their pension and other benefits. No one will be spared.

What about giving permission in the buffer zone limits as against the National Green Tribunal order?

The NGT order came a couple of months ago. After that, BBMP has not given any permission to fresh ones in the buffer zone.

When will you put up encroachers’ list?

We will upload the list of encroachers on our website soon. This list will include zone and survey number of each encroacher. The same will be made available for public in the next three days.
