BJP talks tough, to lead agitation against Amnesty International

BENGALURU: The protest demanding the arrest of those who allegedly raised anti-India slogans at an event here is set to gain vigour with the BJP deciding to lead the stir.

The BJP core committee meeting on Tuesday, chaired by party State president B S Yeddyurappa, decided to form a forum of rightwing writers and thinkers to lead the agitation demanding action against Amnesty International India and the arrest of those who allegedly raised anti-India and anti-Army slogans at the panel discussion on Saturday.

Amnesty had organised the event as part of a campaign to seek justice for “victims of human rights violations by security forces” in Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP has also demanded an apology from the police for caning ABVP activists on Tuesday, who were protesting. It was also decided to take a state BJP delegation to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and urge him to ask the Siddaramaiah government to go tough against those who indulge in “anti-national” and “separatist” activities.

BJP leaders want the Union Home Ministry to cancel the licence of Amnesty International, an NGO, to operate in India, and probe as to whether it had violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

According to sources, the Centre is already looking into the activities of Amnesty in India.

BSY condemns lathicharge

Yeddyurappa condemned the lathicharge on ABVP activists and demanded apology from the police. “Police have resorted to lathicharge on patriotic students of the ABVP who were shouting nationalistic slogans but let off as well as escorted to safety the Kashmiri youths who shouted anti-national slogans at The United Theological College on Saturday,” Yeddyurappa said.
