BENGALURU: Apollo Hospital on Bannerghatta Road has filed a complaint with the J P Nagar police against 30 unidentified people who allegedly barged into the hospital ICU in the wee hours on Wednesday and assaulted doctors, nurses and security guards.
Hospital sources said the miscreants alleged medical negligence in the death of eight-year-old girl Samisha from Bagur Post.
The hospital will come together with the Paediatrics Association, Indian Medical Association, Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association on Friday to condemn the attack.
Dr Ramakrishna Hegde (paediatrician), Dr Krishna Chaithanya (neurosurgeon), Dr Pramod K (senior resident), Dr Govindaiah Yatheesh, Dr Ananth Rao (biochemist), Dr Venkatesh H K (neuro-intensivist), along with two nurses and three security guards, suffered body blows, blunt injuries, nose bleeds, bruises and chin injuries on Wednesday at the hands of ‘miscreants’.
Govindaiah Yatheesh, medical superintendent of the hospital, said, “The child came in with fever, headache and vomitting. The cause of death could be a viral infection. She had convulsions and arrhythmia later. If the family feels there is medical negligence they can approach the Medical Council of India, consumer forum or human rights forum. They even manhandled the grief counsellers who handed the family a glass of water and counselled them for the loss of their child.”
“Dr Hegde, who was the treating doctor, has a swollen and bruised chin. The security guard’s nose is broken and Dr Pramod has nose bleeds. This should not happen with any other doctor,” he said.The most grievously injured among the dozen was Ramesh Ramchiry, a security guard, in his 30s, who has a fractured nose and is admitted in Apollo Hospital. He may need four weeks to recover.
Yatheesh added that even the parents of the child, apalled by the unexpected violence that ensued, apologised to the treating doctor for the nuisance caused by their acquaintances.
