BENGALURU: A 35-year-old inmate escaped from Victoria Hospital on Tuesday night where he was brought for treatment after he attempted suicide in Parappana Agrahara jail premises. The inmate, Mahesh Kumar alias Maasthi, tried to kill himself by consuming toilet cleaner on July 29.
A senior police officer said that Kumar, a native of Kargal in Shivamogga district, killed his wife Vaani (28) by setting her ablaze over a trivial issue in 2015. He was convicted with life imprisonment in December 2016. He was working as a photographer in Jog Falls.
After he consumed toilet cleaner, doctors gave him first aid. He was rushed to Victoria Hospital the same day and was recovering in the general ward. Two policemen were deployed to guard him. On Tuesday night, he managed to gives the cops the slip when they were just about to change the shift with two policemen on night duty. Police immediately combed the hospital premises and went through the CCTV footage, where they saw that Kumar had escaped. The jail officials were informed.
A case was filed at VV Puram police station. A special team has been formed to nab him and statements of the patients who saw him escape have been taken.
