Woman, daughter washed away in drain

BENGALURU: A 57-year-old woman and her 22-year-old daughter were washed away when they fell into a stormwater drain on Friday. Police said the family’s house in JC Nagar in Kurabarahalli near Mahalakshmi Layout got flooded in Friday’s rain.Lingamma and her daughter Pushpa were coming out of their waterlogged house when they fell into the drain.

Raghu Sringeri, a neighbour, said the incident took place around 5.45 pm. “I saw the family coming out of their flooded house. Lingamma’s husband Shivarudrappa came out first. When Lingamma and Pushpa reached near the gate of the house, they fell into a drain near the gate and were washed away. Locals tried to rescue them but the force of the water was too much.”

Raghu added that Shivarudrappa was carrying his grandson Abhishek on his shoulders while he was trying to help his wife and daughter. Minutes earlier, the house owner Shanmugappa had taken away Abhishek’s sister Varshini to safety.

Shivarudrappa’s other two daughters Meenakshi and Shobha were away at work at that time. Abhishek and Varshini are Meenakshi’s children.A family member alleged that neither police nor fire and emergency personnel had started search operations until 11pm.
