BENGALURU: A day after the arrest of tabloid editor Ravi Belagere by the Central Crime Branch on charges of paying a hitman to eliminate a former colleague, the target, Suneel Heggaravalli on Saturday recorded his statement before CCB officials and told them that this was not the first time that Belagere had tried to get him killed.

In his statement, Heggaravalli said Belagere had called him to a TV news channel office in Koramangala a few months ago on the pretext of introducing him to new investors for the channel. As soon as he entered the office, he noticed a couple of sharpshooters at the entrance and this made him suspicious. When Belagere made him wait for two hours, he suspected some conspiracy as relations between them were strained. “Heggaravalli then left the premises on the pretext of attending to an emergency phone call from his family and informed a senior police officer,” a CCB officer said. His statement will be recorded before a magistrate on Monday.

The officer said the assailants were after Heggaravalli for three months. A senior police officer said that on Saturday, Belagere confessed to a rivalry with his former colleague. But he reportedly told the police that he had not given his weapon to sharpshooter Shashidhar Mundewadi. “It is too early to reveal the details of our investigation as we are gathering all evidence to establish that Belagere had given ‘supari’ to Mundewadi to kill Heggaravalli. We believe that it is a well-planned crime and efforts are on to nab some more accused in the case,” the officer said.

Belagere is in police custody for four days and he is lodged at the CCB headquarters, where a team headed by a DCP and ACP began interrogation him. On Friday, a court had rejected Belagere’s bail plea as he was held under Arms Act and on charges of hiring a killer.

Belagere was taken into custody from his office-cum-residence on Friday by a CCB team after supari killer Mundewadi, who was arrested on Thursday, revealed that the weapon the police had seized from him belonged to Belagere.
