Frustrated about missed alliances, man strangled sister

The death of a 28-year-old woman under mysterious circumstances took a different turn after police found out that her killer was her 24-year-old brother.

BENGALURU: The death of a 28-year-old woman under mysterious circumstances took a different turn after police found out that her killer was her 24-year-old brother. He was allegedly frustrated about not getting marriage proposals as his sister was mentally disturbed.

Mahalakshmi, the deceased and a resident of Anchepet near Chickpet, would usually sleep in her room at 2 pm and wake up by 6.30 pm. On June 28, when she did not wake up even after 8 pm, her father Nanjundappa took her to Victoria Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
Nanjundappa filed a complaint with the City Market police the next day and a case of unnatural death was registered.

On Friday, doctors who conducted the post mortem sent a report saying the woman died due to ligature strangulation. The investigators detained Nanjundappa and Shiva Kumar for questioning.
During interrogation, Shiva Kumar confessed that he had strangled his sister to death using a plastic rope on June 28. Police said, “During questioning, we came to know that Mahalakshmi was depressed after her mother’s death six years ago.

Shiva Kumar, who was working in a jewellery shop, was getting a paltry salary. Nanjundappa owns a four-storeyed building in which the family uses two floors. One floor has been given for rent and another on lease.”

“The family was searching for a bride for Shiva Kumar, but many of them rejected the alliance after they realised that Shiva Kumar’s sister was mentally disturbed. Mahalakshmi also used to fight with her brother and father over petty issues and was insisting that he stay in home and not go to work. He had stayed at home for six months,” police added. “Frustrated by all these factors Shiva Kumar killed on June 28 and went out of the house. He had come back only after Nanjundappa alerted him about his sister at 8 pm. All these days, he was at home pretending to be innocent.  City Market police have sent the accused to judicial custody.
