Students up in arms over plan to shut down New Fort College

Hundreds of students on Friday staged a protest against the decision of the Department of Pre-university Education to shut down New Fort PU College in Chamrajpet in the city.

BENGALURU: Hundreds of students on Friday staged a protest against the decision of the Department of Pre-university Education to shut down New Fort PU College in Chamrajpet in the city.
Fort College was in the recent list of 17 PU colleges across the state where the student strength was less than 10. So, the department decided to shut it down.

Students and members of All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) gathered near the Department of Public Instructions and staged a protest.  AIDSO Bengaluru president Ravinandan B B said, “The department is saying that it decided to shut down the college due to lack of students. But, as per our information, the college has at least 150 students.”

The protestors said Fort College is part of heritage and was started during the British Raj. It is the duty of the department to save it, they said. They also said if the college is shut down, the land will be grabbed by builders as it is located in the centre of the city. A delegation of students met the the PU Department director and submitted a representation in this regard.
