BENGALURU: The K G Halli police on Sunday recorded the statement of D Veeresh, who allegedly sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl in the city on Saturday early morning. Veeresh told police that he even attempted to kill the minor after the crime to destroy evidence.

“During the interrogation, Veeresh, said that the girl was returning to her shed after answering nature’s call. He dragged her to a nearby ground to rape. As she tried to raise an alarm, he attacked her with a stone, injuring her head and finger. As the victim was bleeding profusely in the head, he thought she might have died and hence threw her in front of a residential building. Subsequently, he hurled stones at a car to alert the owner,” said a senior police officer.

“Veeresh’s pregnant wife, who had gone to her native, returned to the city after the incident. The couple have two children. We verified Veeresh’s background but the ragpicker was not found to be involved in any other crime,” the officer added.

Veeresh joined parents in search of girl

When the parents were frantically searching for the girl, Veeresh joined them on the pretext of helping them. He even tried to direct them towards the ground where he had assaulted and abandoned the minor. He was present when the police arrived to inform the parents about the girl being admitted to the hospital. He was curious to know the next move of police. Only after the parents went to Bowring hospital, he went to sleep in his shed.

Bid to wash inner wear gave cops a hint

Some youths from the area were taken to the police station. During questioning, Veeresh went to the toilet and tried to wash his inner wear, which had blood stains. Police found his behaviour suspicious and upon grilling, he confessed to the crime.
