BENGALURU: Bengaluru rural police, who are probing the murder of a local BJP leader, suspect the involvement of one Gym Manju behind the crime. The fact that Manju is absconding after the incident has only strengthened the police’s suspicion.

BJP leader Kittaganahalli Srinivas (42) was hacked to death during the early hours of Tuesday. His wife, Shailaja, is a member of Bengaluru Urban Zilla Panchayat and the family was residing at Kittaganahalli near Anekal. Following the murder, security arrangements have been beefed in the area to prevent any untoward incident. "Based on preliminary investigation, it is a clear case of political rivalry and assailants might have been contract killers," a senior police officer said.

“Manju, who runs a gym in Kittaganahalli, wanted his mother —who was from Congress —to be elected the chairman of Bommasandra Town Municipal Council (TMC). The opposition in the Council had challenged it in court and Manju had also filed two petitions regarding the issue in the local court. Following a hearing, the court had quashed Manju's petition. Upset over the issue, police suspect that Manju might have then hatched a plot to kill Kittaganahalli Srinivas alias Vasu, a member of Bommasandra TMC,” the officer added.

Srinivas used to drive alone and did not have personal security. The assailants, who had tracked his movements, attacked him after he got down from the car at a park next to BTL College on Hosur road. Police have obtained CCTV footage to ascertain the identity of the vehicle used by the accused, the officer added. Two platoons of police have been deployed near the crime site.
