BENGALURU: A 26-year-old excavator operator, who was washed away in the open drain at Kurubarahalli on Saturday evening, was traceless even after 24 hours. The rescue teams, including State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, were on the job to find the body of Shanthakumar till Sunday evening. He was a resident of Tigalarapalya and working at the drainage to build an adjacent parapet wall at the time of the incident. The force of water, which was flowing 8 feet above, was such that the JCB toppled and he fell in the drain.

“We received a call around 9.16pm and the team was sent to the spot. More than 45 personnel searched for the body for about 6km till Sumanahalli on Sunday. But we could not find it and the operation was called off around 6pm as it was getting dark. We will start again on Monday and the BBMP has provided some machines to dig the silt, which affected the rescue operation greatly,” said a senior officer from Fire department.

An eyewitness and Shanthakumar’s co-worker, Nagalingappa told the Express: “It was about 9pm, when Shanthakumar took shelter inside the excavator to protect himself from rain. However, the excavator  started tilting towards left due to gushing water. In a bid to escape, Shanthkumar jumped into the nearby drain. Two of the workers tried to rescue him by giving a rope but he was washed away.

Basavaraj, the contractor said that Shanthakumar was his brother in law. He was working with him for past ten years.

“The family is in shock,” he said.
