BENGALURU: Another corporal punishment case has been reported from a city school, where a student's eardrum got damaged after a teacher beat him with a duster. The incident occurred at Narayana e-techno school located at Vidyaranyapura on Wednesday. This came to light after a video of the teacher beating the student with a duster went viral on social media. The teacher has been arrested.

Shashank V, a class 10 student, was beaten up by his Mathematics teacher during summer vacation special classes. According to parents and students, when the boy was talking to one of his classmates, the teacher got angry and hit him with a duster. However, following the complaint filed by the parents, police arrested 32-year-old Venkatasubbaiah under Juvenile Justice Act and sent him to judicial custody. According to police officials, they have booked the teacher on charges of "voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means".

Several parents gathered near the school on Thursday morning in protest against the teacher who hit the child and also against the school for conducting classes during summer vacations. One of the parents said, "Every year, this school asks us to send kids even during summer vacations , but doesn't take care of them. We demand action against the teacher who beat the child."

Srivani Y, dean of Narayana e-techno school, said that they had suspended the teacher after the incident and also raised allegations against the parents saying that the damage occurred because they had beaten up the child recently. "It is not just because the boy's eardrum got damaged as he was hit by the teacher. As per our information, even the parents beat him up recently due to which he has to under go surgery," she said.

The special classes conducted by the school during summer vacation have been termed as illegal as it is against the calendar of events  released by the department of public instruction. Not just this, there are several other schools in the city which are conducting classes for students who will appear for their board exams in 2019.

D Shashi Kumar, General Secretary of Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka said, "The department of education has to take such instances seriously and initiate action against those violating calendar of events."
