BENGALURU: Bharathinagar police on Friday arrested a 23-year-old man on charges of raping his 28-year-old cousin, who is said to be hearing and speech impaired. Police said she was being sexually assaulted by her cousin repeatedly for the past four to five months.

The accused has been identified as Mahesh H, a native of Kollegala in Chamarajnagar who was working at a hardware shop in Shivajinagar. A senior police officer said that based on a complaint, Mahesh was nabbed at his native place and was sent for medical examination. Now, he is in judicial custody.

On April 10, the victim's mother had approached Bharathinagar police. She alleged that Mahesh was staying with them since four months and one day, when he noticed the victim was alone at home, he sexually assaulted her. He also threatened her not to reveal the incident to anyone. The mother, who noticed unusual behaviour in her daughter, asked her what was wrong, following which, the girl narrated the incident using sign language.

Mahesh was thrashed by the victim's father but he fled to his native place before police were informed about the incident. Police went to his native place and arrested him. His statement was recorded and medical reports are awaited for further investigation.

The relatives of the victim told TNIE, "Mahesh had a dispute over a property issue at his native place and was forced to leave. The victim's father helped him get a job in Shivajinagar and when the incident came to light, he left the job and went back to Kollegala."
