Bengaluru: Cops crack murder case in two months, nab three

Trio decamped with cash, gold worth D8.50 lakh from victim’s home; man’s body was found only after a month

BENGALURU: The KR Puram police have arrested three persons including two women who had murdered a 67-year-old financier and had robbed cash and gold worth Rs 8.50 lakh approximately. The accused have been identified as Sumati (23), Sumayya Banu (22), both residents of MG Nagar in Shankara Math, and Sumati’s brother Karthik alias Appu (20), a resident of Papanna Layout at Maruthi Nagar in Yelahanka. They had allegedly murdered Sanjay Satish at his rented flat in TGR Corner apartment at Bethel Nagar, off Kodigehalli Main Road.

Sanjay Satish, a volunteer at ISKCON, was a financier and was living alone as his wife and children were settled in New Zealand. The murder had come to light when his neighbours sensed foul smell emanating from his flat on April 4. They alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and broke open the door to find Sanjay’s decomposed body. Prima facie, it was established that it was a murder as his legs were tied.

The police, who launched a probe and verified the CCTV footage of the apartment and phone call details of the deceased. It was established that he had got calls from one particular number 3-4 times in the last one week. Based on these clues, three people were picked up for questioning and they confessed to the murder.

“Sumayya revealed that she had gone to Malleshwaram police station on March 27, to file a complaint against her husband, Dadapeer, as he was harassing her. The same day, Sanjay Satish had gone to the station to file a complaint against someone in connection with his finance business. The two had met there and Sanjay had told Sumayya that he was living alone as his family members had settled abroad. He had also requested her to find a woman who can work as a domestic help at his house. The both had exchanged phone numbers and Sumayya had called him 3-4 times to discuss about finding a domestic help,” the police said.

“Sumayya had discussed the same with her friend Sumati and they went to Sanjay’s house on March 31. They noticed Sanjay wearing gold jewellery and having cash at home. They had told him that they would come back after two days. But before they returned, they decided to murder him and rob valuables from his house. Sumati’s younger brother also joined hands with the women. On March 2 around 4 pm, the trio went to Sanjay’s flat on the pretext of working there. While he was talking to them, Sumati strangled him using her veil while Sumayya tied his legs with hers. Meanwhile, Karthik threw chilli powder on Sanjay’s face and smothered him to death. Later, they decamped with `1.50 lakh cash, three gold chains and three rings weighing 230 grams worth around `7 lakh that Sanjay was wearing,” the police said.
