CHENNAI: It was a rare occasion for the residents of North Chennai to get a feel of the tcultural extravaganza that was always enjoyed by their fellow citizens living in other parts of the metropolis.
The programme ‘Music in the Park’ organised by the Tourism and Culture Department unfolded before them the opportunity to listen to the performances of maestros in Carnatic music, otherwise confined to the wellknown Sabhas in the city.
For the first time, the tourism department has taken up the initiative of hosting music concerts in the parks across the city to enable the ordinary people to become part of it. According to the officials, the department will host such concerts at least every fortnight at the parks “We began our progamme at Anna Park in Royapuram as North Chennai has often been neglected or ignored when it comes to the hosting of cultural programme. We want to change this trend,” said the spokesperson with the department. Apart from the Carnatic music concert a Poikalkuthirai performance was also held.
