CHENNAI: Reacting to all-round criticism of the government’s soft stance towards the private conservancy operator Neel Metal Fanalca, Mayor M Subramanian on Tuesday announced the setting up of an all-party delegation to meet the NMF’s top officials soon, to ask them to “correct” their operations in the city.
After complaints were made against NMF over its poor performance by almost all members during a council meet, Subramanian said, “Though the Council passed a resolution to recruit over 5,800 conservancy staff in May to replace NMF in its four zones, we cannot move further on the recruitment since a case filed by them is pending in the High Court and the next hearing is scheduled on December 7.”
The Mayor’s indirect reply has cleared two things.
Though most councillors have been demanding it since 2009, NMF will not be sent out and recruitment of 5,800-odd conservancy staff would also not be done now.
Earlier, participating in the debate, Opposition Floor Leader Saidai P Ravi said, “Most of the councillors have opposed NMF for its sluggish operations. All of them will be happy if the private operator’s employees were replaced by civic body’s own staff in its four zones. If the issue of poor management by NMF was not dealt with properly and immediately, we (councillors) would be facing the public’s wrath in the crucial months to come.”
DMK’s Floor Leader Ramalingam also echoed the same demand saying, “Every councillor wishes that the NMF be kicked out.”
