CHENNAI: Management students attending the national convention of the Madras Management Association (MMA) received a stern warning from the Association’s president, N K Ranganath. He told the students that despite the many adjectives being used to describe India’s economic rise on the world stage, Indian corporate culture could be suffering from a crisis of ethics.

“First learn to walk the talk, especially with values and ethics. Before you say something think it through. Don’t say things just for effect. That is the problem with the current generation of managers,” Ranganath told the students. “I hope you, the future generation of managers, will correct this,” he added.

Ranganath’s comments came at the valedictory function of the 9th MMA All India Management Students’ Convention. The function was attended by around 4,000 management students from B-schools across the country.

The two-day convention, themed ‘Challenge of Change’, saw eminent speakers address the students. Noted brand strategist Harish Bijoor, Ashok Leyland MD R Seshasayee, Murugappa group senior VP (HR) Shyam C Raman and Ma Foi Randstad CEO K Pandia Rajan were among those who addressed the students.

R K Swamy Hansa Group chairman Srinivasan K Swamy, in his valedictory address, told the students that change is an evolutionary process that mostly remains invisible over the passage of time. He added that India’s economic prospects were being dragged down by the poor quality of infrastructure and governance as well as the corruption that plagues the system.

Prizes were also given away to the winners of various competitions organised as part of the convention. Vasant Kumar of LIBA won the title of ‘Chanakya’ and a cash prize of Rs one lakh for winning the ‘Mastermind’ contest, which tests students’ ability to strategise.
