CHENNAI: The students who were present at Lady Andal school to participate in the ‘One Nation Reading Together’ initiative by Scholastic India, swore by the saying — 'Reading maketh a full man' — as they participated in various events that stressed the importance of reading. In this annual event, children from various schools will spend 30 minutes on the last Friday of November, reading for fun and celebrating it. On Friday, former Indian cricket captain Krishnamachary Srikkanth administered the reading pledge to more than 500 students present at the school campus. The pledge was written by author Anushka Ravishankar. “More than 35 city schools participated in the event. A parade around the school was organised and all school students participated in it, holding placards on reading.

These students were led by school bands,” informed Tahsin Chacko, Regional Manager-South, Scholastic India.

She added that this year around, 2,000 schools across the country participated in the ‘One Nation Reading Together’ initiative.

It was not just the pledge and parade, the students also witnessed various entertainment programmes. Amit Singh from the theatre group ASAP Productions emphasised the importance of reading with poems. A classical dance performance was also organised on the occasion by the students of Thejas, a dance school run by danseuse Srekala Bharath. Scholastic India has tied up with eleven NGOs in different parts of the country to set up mini libraries for underprivileged children.

Scholastic character — Clifford, the big red dog warmly welcomed all the participants to the event.
