CHENNAI: “Northern Chennai will be free from traffic chaos and pollution within a year. The government is working hard to develop northern city in par with southern city,” assured Tamil Nadu Assembly speaker, D Jayakumar.

Inaugurating the 47th branch of Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital at New Washermenpet on Tuesday, the speaker said that the government is fastening the Chennai-Ennore ports Expressway work so that the container lorries will not enter the city and thereafter hospitals may function freely in northern city.

“At present, all the lorries going towards Ennore port are travelling through SN Chetty road and MS Koil Street. This causes inconvenience to the people living in this vicinity. But after the completion of the Expressway work in a year, all the containers will take the new route without plying on the city roads,” said the speaker.

He also blamed the previous DMK government for delaying the Expressway project, which resulted in the further rise of the project’s estimated cost.

The speaker promised that handling of hazardous cargoes at Chennai port will be shifted to Ennore port by 2012.  “Handling of iron ore and coal at Chennai port turns New Washermenpet and nearby areas into highly polluted.  After shifting the handling of hazardous cargoes to Ennore port, these areas will be pollution free completely,” promised Jayakumar.

He appreciated Dr Agarwal Eye Hospital’s managing director Prof Amar Agarwal for opening a new branch in Northern Chennai.

“This new branch is equipped with advanced technology aimed at providing complete eye care services. We are also doing 40 free eye surgeries at our hospital every day. So the people of this area can make use of our eye care service, which is of world class,” said Prof Amar Agarwal.

Dr Radhakrishna Nagar MLA, P Vetrivel, and Dr Agarwal Eye Hospital’s CEO, Suresh, were also present on the occasion.
