A 22-year-old man working as a driver for a police inspector and a former friend of police (FOP) was arrested for misbehaving with a 14-year-old girl at Padi New Nagar, on Thursday night.

Police said Anbu alias Anbalagan, (22), who was privately engaged as the driver of Thirumangalam Police Inspector A Shankar, moved into a house in Padi New Nagar three months ago as a tenant. On Thursday night, he learnt that the girl and her brother were alone while her parents had gone to a domestic ceremony.

He came downstairs and took the girl to the second floor as almost all the occupants in that floor had gone out. He then molested the girl. Her brother who searched for his sister came looking for her in the second floor to ask her to serve dinner. He saw the tenant molesting her and called for help from neighbours.

Hearing the boy’s alarm, the neighbours rushed to the scene and rescued the girl. They thrashed Anbu and detained him. They also called the police, who took custody of Anbu.

The child’s parents lodged a complaint with JJ Nagar Police station and a case was registered under the provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Anbu was remanded to Judicial Custody on Thursday.

Woman Ends Life

In an ironic incident, four months after a railway contractor committed self-immolation due to mounting debts, his 43-year-old second wife ended her life by hanging at her house in Pallavaram on Thursday. She was also under constant pressure from money lenders to whom her husband owed money.

Police said Banu hanged herself using a saree in the morning after she sent her domestic aide to a grocery store. Her husband Anandan Pillai had accumulated debts running into several crores of rupees due to the poor profit margins he got in executing railway contracts. A distraught Pillai set himself ablaze in an SUV at Besant Nagar in the second week of March.
