Chennaites can now look forward to one more award in recognition of their efforts towards the development of the city. But this time, you don’t need to be a celebrity artist or news-maker. In fact, the award is exclusively designed to recognise the ‘silent champions’ of Chennai.
The ‘Champions of Chennai’ award instituted by the KSA Trust, is given for outstanding work in six categories including arts, sports, education, health care, social initiative and enterprise. A panel of advisors has been formed to nominate potential awardees in each field and a research on each of them is being done.
“A number of people do outstanding social service in their respective fields and yet go about their jobs silently, without seeking any recognition. Though there are a number of awards in India to recognise outstanding persons, most of them are at the national level and the awardees are already well known to people. With this award we hope to recognise people at the community level who make a difference and could be an inspiration for our youth and others,” said K Kalyanasundaram, one of the members of the board of KSA Trust, addressing the press conference here on Wednesday. The trust has been formed by Kalayan Sundaram Associates and Tandem, both Chennai based establishments, which are celebrating their 25th and 10th anniversary respectively.
In the long run, the KSA hopes to take the award forward to smaller cities and towns and also expand the number of categories to science and films. The awards consisting of a trophy and a citation will have its inaugural ceremony on August 17 at the Chinmaya Heritage Centre. At the award ceremony a coffee table book featuring the awardees and their achievements will be distributed to invites, guests and others. Chennaiites are free to send in their nominations for the Champion of Chennai Award to KSA Trust at Kalyan@ksaca.com.
