Railway official in soup for contempt

R Nandakumar, the Deputy Principal Engineer (Construction), Salem, has been summoned by the Madras High Court in connection with a contempt of court case.

Justice KK Sasidharan issued the summons on Wednesday while taking on file a contempt application from R Varadharajan of Sivagiril village in Erode district. According to advocate SP Sudalaiyandi, Varadharajan purchased land measuring 5.75 acres in Athur village in Karur district in 1999. While so, the Southern Railway sought to acquire a portion of the land for laying a broad-gauge line and the petitioner handed over about 4,000 sq.ft, in 2,000 for a meagre consideration of `8,126.

The railway dumped sand and blue metal on the entire land belonging to the petitioner. Even after completion of the broad-gauge project and inauguration of train service between Karur and Salem, the Railway did not take any step to remove the sand and blue metal.

The petitioner filed a writ plea and disposing of the same on January 22, Justice K Venkataraman directed engineer Nandagopal to remove the sand and blue metal on or before March 31. Contending that the engineer had not taken any step to remove it, Varadharajan filed the present plea.
