Police are on the trail of a 30-year-old tailor, who has emerged as the main suspect in the murder of a young woman at Kodungaiyur on Tuesday.

The body of S Pushpalatha (32) was found with a throat injury. Her ten-year old daughter who returned from school found the woman’s body. A gold chain was found missing. Pushpalatha was working as a tailor in a garment export company, while her husband Srinivasan (40), worked in a timber depot. The couple resided in an independent house on 86th Street in MR Nagar.

A day after the incident, a senior police official said that while the investigating cops awaited the post-mortem report, they strongly suspected that the knife injury was only superficial and could not be the cause of death. “Our suspicion is that she was smothered to death,” he told Express.

Describing the scene of crime, he said that the victim was found on the floor with a pillow placed on her body and her clothes next to her. The killer had scattered chilli powder all over the place. “There was no sign of forced entry into the house,” the officer said. “There were no struggle marks on the victim’s body.”

The cops also suspected that the missing gold thali was only a ploy to divert their attention. “The woman’s ear studs and nose ring were intact. So, the motive could not have been robbery,” he pointed out.

All this led the police to believe that the killer was known to Pushpalatha. On questioning the local residents, they learnt that the victim’s acquaintance V Ramakrishnan (30) was seen in the vicinity on the day of the incident. “The victim and Ramu had worked as tailors for the same company,” the officer pointed out. Hence, police suspect she was murdered by him.

Ramu is absconding and this has strengthened their suspicion.
