'No outsiders for youth's last rites'

No outsiders should be allowed to participate in the last rites to be performed by the family members of E Ilavarasan, Special Government Pleader IS Inbadurai told the Madras High Court on Wednesday.

When a writ petition from C Vaidhyanathan, president of Lok Jansakthi Party of Valasaravakkam, challenging the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Dharmapuri district and permission to participate in the last rites came up before the second bench of Justices V Dhanabalan and C T Selvam, Inbadurai told the judges that the petitioner was neither a blood-relative of Ilavarasan nor a close friend of the family members. He had filed the writ petition only for publicity, he argued.

As regards imposition of Section 144, Inbadurai sought time for filing counter. The bench adjourned the matter till July 29.

Meanwhile, the bench disposed off another writ petition from advocate VA Thirunavukkarasu of Chepauk, praying for a direction to the government to conduct a judicial probe into the death of Ilavarasan by a senior sitting judge of the HC. The disposal followed the submission of Inbadurai that the State had already appointed a commission headed by Justice S R Singaravelu, a retired judge of the HC. The petition had thus become infructuous, he added.
