Missed it by that much. One day, to be precise. As the world’s most famous ‘royal’ baby arrived on Monday evening, people outside London’s St Mary’s Hospital may have celebrated with vigour, but his parents – Prince William and Kate Middleton – ought to be disappointed. Why? Because, if their 3.8 kg bundle of joy had been born on July 23 instead, he may well have grown up to be a super-famous actor. Though acting isn’t in his genes (Kate went close during her fashionista days), he was just a few hours short of sharing a birthday with Kollywood hearththrob Suriya and the boy who played Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe. While the Singam and Singam II actor turned 38 on Tuesday, Radcliffe turned a more modest 24.

Through their rather subdued celebrations, fans of the actor also felt ‘disappointed’ that the royal baby had not shared Suriya’s birthday. “If the baby had been born on our Singam’s birthday, he would have also been a great star – but in English movies, not Tamil films,” said an elated Saravanan, a fan who was sticking ‘happy b’day Suriya’ posters in K K Nagar. A few other Suriya fans were oblivious to the fact that the third heir to the British throne had been born in London, because they were preparing for birthday celebrations for their hero.

But when asked for their views, most of them said that it was a sign of luck for the child, “Like Saravanan became Suriya and then became famous, the child must also have a name that starts with ‘S’. This will bring the child great success,” opined Keerthivasan, a Suriya fan who was heading to watch Singam 2 at Kasi Theatre. Incidentally, reports from sources close to Suriya said that he was taking a break from shooting and would be spending a quiet birthday with Jyothika and his family.

However, there may just be a reason why the baby will not entirely rue being born on July 23. Beyond Radcliffe and Suriya, he would have also had to share a ‘high-strung’ birthday with the infamous music director Himesh Reshammiya. In fact, that may be the only consolation for having the same birthday as American teen music sensation Selena Gomez, who tweeted that she was ‘thrilled’ at sharing a birthday with the royal kid. Hope that she isn’t inspired to write another song like Birthday, which was part of her debut album that released on Tuesday.
