Sub-Inspector gets bail in lawyer assault case

A Metropolitan Magistrate Court in George Town on Thursday, granted bail to a sub-inspector of police (SI) who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a lawyer on the premises of the Madras High Court.

A Metropolitan Magistrate Court in George Town on Thursday, granted bail to a sub-inspector of police (SI) who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a lawyer on the premises of the Madras High Court.

The SI, G Shankaranarayanan, was arrested following protests by lawyers on Tuesday night, alleging that he had illegally entered the court premises without proper permission to secure the lawyer.

The SI allegedly tried to detain the lawyer in a case relating to the assault of a doctor. This led to a confrontation between the SI and a groups of advocates. A complaint was later filed by the president of Madras High Court Advocates Association G Mohanakrishnan against Shankaranarayanan, who was remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday.

Conditional bail was granted to him on Thursday as the prosecution did not oppose the application.
