Symposium on Cystic Fibrosis Held

CHENNAI: Kanchi Kamakoti Child’s Trust Hospital conducted a symposium on Cystic Fibrosis (CF), in association with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics — Chennai here recently. The aim of the programme was to sensitise medical professionals about the need to diagnose CF early and talk about the scenario and management options available in India.

Dr Bala Ramachandran, medical director, Kanchi Kamakoti Child’s Trust Hospital, emphasised the need to provide a single window type of care for CF. Pediatric pulmonologist Dr Sushil Kabra, professor of pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, addressed the gathering.

Other participants included Dr S Sivabalan, pediatric pulmonologist, Dr S Srinivas, pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr A Sumanth, pediatrician and S Suresh, physiotherapist of the hospital.

A separate clinic for CF has also been started at the hospital to provide one-stop service for patients afflicted with CF, thus avoiding the need to go to various doctors and health care providers. Studies have shown that outcomes are better when care is provided by an experienced group, rather than by solitary healthcare providers.  The clinic will function on Fridays between 3 and 6 pm.
