Students Quizzed On Sikh Guru

CHENNAI: As part of Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary, oratorical competitions in English and Tamil for school and college students were organised by Guru Nanak College recently under the banner of ‘Gurushiksha 2014’, recently. The competition was conducted in two stages – preliminary and finals. There were four categories – School (Tamil), School (English), College (Tamil) and College (English). More than 300 students from 30 colleges and 37 schools from across the city participated.  The topic for the preliminary was ‘Guru Nanak’s teachings on Human Values’ and for the finals, ‘Relevance of Guru Nanak’s teachings on cleanliness towards a Swachh Bharat’. The topics were translated in  Tamil as well.Five school students and seven college students were shortlisted in each category in the prelims. In the finals they were ranked and awarded first prize of `10, 000, second prize of `5, 000 and third prize of `3, 000. Others received consolation prizes of `1, 000 each. A total of `84, 000 was given away as prize money.  Swaran Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary /Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce,who was the chief guest, distributed the  prizes.
