CHENNAI: Taking astrology to an extreme, a 61-year-old woman took vengeance on her 70-year-old husband by murdering him in cold blood on the suspicion of his affair with the daughter-in-law, after confirming it with an astrologer.

The incident took place at Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district in the wee hours of Saturday.

Police said the accused, K Vijayalakshmi, stabbed her husband Kathirvelan with a kitchen knife at around 1.15 am while he was asleep.

She stayed put in the house when cops from Periyapalayam police station rushed to the house on information from neighbours, and admitted to have killed her husband. “The couple’s only son was speech-impaired and his wife had got separated from him a few years ago. Vijayalakshmi suspected that Kathirvelan was having an affair with his daughter-in-law. Recently, Vijayalakshmi consulted an astrologer, who not only told her that Kathirvelan was having an extra-marital affair but that he might even kill her if she dared to oppose the relationship,” said a police officer.

On Friday night, the elderly couple had a bitter quarrel over the issue and Kathirvelan had reportedly beaten up Vijayalakshmi. Police said an enraged Vijayalakshmi waited till he went to bed and stabbed him to death in the dead of night.

The Periyapalayam police have arrested Vijayalakshmi on charges of murder.
