CHENNAI: Three persons were killed and the driver injured when the car in which they travelling rammed a lorry parked by the road at Madhuranthagam on GST road in the wee hours of Friday.

The deceased, J Jayamanickam (36), M Venkateshan (40) and K Sugumaran of Chennai, were killed on the spot while the driver Selvam alias Gnanavel is hospitalised with severe injuries and is in a serious condition. Jayamanickam and Venkateshan are civil engineers and relatives staying in Koyambedu and Valasaravakkam respectively. Sugumaran, a resident of Virugambakkam, is a building contractor. They were returning after visiting the Sathuragiri temple in Virudhunagar.

The accident took place around 4 am. Police believe the driver might have dozed off. Poor visibility due to fog could have been a factor too. The car was travelling at a high speed and the driver had not noticed the lorry till the end. Further, police said the lorry driver, who is absconding, had parked the sand-laden vehicle on the roadside without any reflectors. “The lorry should have been parked in the separate bay. We are looking for the driver,” said inspector Ravichandran.  Madhuranthagam police registered a case and handed over the bodies to relatives after autopsy.
