CHENNAI: A 33-year-old-man was detained by City Police for raping a 19 year-old engineering college student on Saturday after he was located hiding out in Cuddalore.
According to sources, the man, married with children and employed as support staff in an IT major, allegedly intercepted the girl at Sunrise Avenue - ECR junction, around 5.30 pm on December 22.
Claiming to be a cop attached to the Semmencherry Police station, he took the girl with him on his two-wheeler and asked her boyfriend, who was with her, to go to Semmencherry Police station where, the accused claimed, her parents had come looking for her.
The accused, however, deviated away from Semmencherry Police station, telling the victim to remain calm, assuring her that he was taking her to the house of a woman police official.
Taking her to the police station for interrogation, he told her, would malign her modesty and assured her of discreet interrogation. The accused took the victim to his rented accommodation in Shollinganallur and raped the girl.
The boy, meanwhile, had gone to Semmenchery police station and learned that no one from that station had picked up a girl from ECR. An hour later, the girl arrived at the police station and informed the police that she was raped by the accused.
Her complaint was recorded and a case was registered under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) in Semmencherry.
The case was subsequently transferred to Neelankarai Police station which has jurisdiction over the location from where she was picked up.
The police are conducting further investigations and interrogating the accused in this regard.
