Almost all shops in the city have a section sanctimoniously reserved for veshtis, including both the low and high range ones. Head to Saravana Stores Gold Palace and Textiles and you would find cotton veshtis at prices as low at `97. “We have the two-metre dhotis that are priced between `100 and `450 and then we have the four-metre dhotis that cost between `148 and `800. The silk ones start from `900 and go up to `3,000,” says a staff.
“If you are going for cotton veshtis, it is cheap. I remember forgetting to get a veshti from home for a ceremony and buying it from a small shop for just `100,” says Arun S Nair, IT employee. Most of his friends usually get it from Ramraj Cottons that has them priced between `170 and `1,000 for cotton ones and `1,500 to `4,000 for the silk veshtis meant for occasions. “The price for the silk ones varies for the border and quality,” says Chidambaram, online section, Ramaraj Cottons. Pothys has their silk line costing up to `12,000. The cotton line falls between `350 and `3,000.
“It becomes an expensive affair for marriages. I know a friend, who bought a silk veshti for `9,000,” says Abhinandan, employee at an events management company.
