CHENNAI: Folk dancer Mohana alias Mohanambal (55) and her sister Nirmala (60), from whose rented premises in Vellore, over `4 crore cash, jewellery and FD receipts had been seized, were refused bail by the Madras HC on Monday.

According to police, they were involved in smuggling of sandalwood, red-sanders, extortion, criminal intimidation and money laundering.

Dismissing their applications for bail, Justice P Devadass said they were involved in many criminal activities.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, CDRI, is also conducting a probe as to the violations under Income Tax Act and Money Laundering Act. They have association with other criminals and have the tendency to abscond. “In the circumstances, if let out on bail, there is every possibility of them interfering with the investigation and fleeing away from justice,” the judge said and rejected their bail plea.
