CHENNAI: In a largely one-sided match, the Argentines defeated Germans by a huge margin of 5-0 to lift the World Cup! This, however, was in a match in Chennai, hours before the real FIFA World Cup Final was staged miles away in Brazil on Sunday night.
Celebrating the World Cup 2014, the Pachaiyappa’s Harrington Football Academy organised a ‘final’ match between Argentina and Germany at the Pachaiyappa’s college ground on Sunday evening. The team representing the Latin Americans was led by young Kollywood star Arya, while ‘Gana’ Ulaganathan, a Gana Pattu singer who helped popularise the urban ballad, led the German team.
Egged on by over 100 young football fans including students of various schools who were trained by the academy, the teams fought a tight match which was won by the Argentines with a margin of 5-0.
Bouyed by the victory of his team, Arya expressed hope that Argentina would win the Cup in the real final at Maracana. (In the real contest, however, the Germans defeated Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup)
The actor complimented the academy for its efforts to popularise the game among the children in the city. Several former football players who represented the country were honoured during the event.
The academy urged the Centre and State Governments to take efforts to build a foundation and make India one of the participants in World Cup 2026. It pleaded for the reintroduction of sports quota in Central and State employment recruitments.
The match was inaugurated by K Josh Thangiah, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kilpauk, and a huge cake in the shape of a football ground with official logos of FIFA was cut by S Jayachandran, chairman, Pachaiyappa’s Trust Board.
Following the event, the live telecast of FIFA world cup was screened at the Arignar Anna Arangam in Chetpet.
