Express photographer ‘flies’ into 1st place

CHENNAI: Art Houz, an art gallery in the city awarded the first prize to The New Indian Express Principal Photographer P Jawahar in a competition organised for photojournalists in the city.

The competition titled Magic Lantern, which is conducted every year exclusively for photojournalists, received as many as 50 entries for 13 photojournalists in the city.

P Jawahar’s photo of a girl eating rice from a plate buzzing with flies near the Kodungaiyur dumpyard won him the trophy and a cash prize of  `10,000.

The photographer shot the picture as part of a photo feature on the life of people living near the dumpyard particularly during summer when they had to put up with the fly menace. The feature was then published in City Express.

Photojournalists from The Times of India and Dinamalar won the second and third place respectively.
