CHENNAI: With the prestigious BNP Paribas WTA Finals presented by SC Global less than a month away from kicking off in Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has engaged Indian Tennis Legend Vijay Amritraj to begin a series of promotional events in India.

Amritraj will conduct tennis clinics for budding tennis players in Chennai and Delhi as part of the STB’s efforts to generate awareness about  the WTA finals happening in Singapore from October 17 to 26, 2014. At the announcement of the collaboration made recently, Amritraj said that while sports enthusiasts wouldn’t want to miss the grand event, newcomers would also be in for a treat.

In a five-year agreement from 2014 - 2018, Singapore is set to host the most prestigious event on the WTA calendar that will witness the top eight singles players. And for the first time, top eight doubles teams will compete for a prize money of US$ 6.5 million. The tournament will be complemented by live entertainment, brand-new outdoor Fan Zone, and clinics with tennis legends – all of which will provide tennis fans a diverse experience during the 10-day championship period.

“We are witnessing a gradual convergence of sport and entertainment industries. As an experienced host of such multi-dimensional events, tennis fans and casual enthusiasts can expect the WTA finals in Singapore to be a world-class sport-entertainment experience like no other,” said Jean Ng, director sports, STB, who was present at the announcement.

The WTA Finals will be hosted at the newly opened, state-of-the-art US$ 1 billion Singapore Sports Hub (SSH), located in the heart of the city. The tournament will be held in the Singapore Indoor Stadium which is part of the SSH.

World-class infrastructure aside, the tennis event will have an entertainment spectacle featuring new events such as the WTA Future Stars competition and WTA Legends exhibition matches, coach and trade symposiums, as well as a series of concerts and lifestyle events.
