CHENNAI: Festivities to celebrate DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi’s birthday caused quite a traffic obstruction on Anna Salai on Tuesday. And unfortunately for commuters, the brightly festooned Anna Salai stretch toward Teynampet was crowded with party workers during peak office traffic hours — 8.30 am to 9.30 am. The party members had come from far and near to celebrate their leader’s special day at Anna Arivalayam.
Of course, as is a given party workers stopped vehicles on Anna Salai to allow DMK leaders to pass through. “More than 200 party workers were present at Anna Arivalayam in the early hours of the day to celebrate our party chief’s birthday,” said a party worker, who came all the way from Tiruvallur to wish his party leader.
While for DMK members the Anna Salai stretch towards Teynampet was thick with a festival-like atmosphere, for members of the public it was an absolute nightmare. Professionals and school students waited impatiently in auto rickshaws for the DMK leaders to move forward. And there was no traffic police to assist either. At some points, DMK members turned to policemen for stopping the vehicles, a commuter said.
