CHENNAI: A 30-year-old man who runs a mobile eatery on a hand-pulled cart at Koyambedu, his mother-in-law and brother-in-law were arrested after he married a 16-year-old girl even while his first wife is six months pregnant, here on Wednesday.

The girl’s mother and brother were accused of harassing the first wife and abetting  child marriage.

Police said on March 3, Shankar got married to the minor girl, who is a daughter of a 40-year-old woman with whom he was in an extra-marital relationship, on March 3, 2014.

The accused along with the woman murdered the latter’s husband in 2008 as the deceased continued to object to the relationship. The woman arranged Shankar’s marriage with her niece Mahalakshmi three years ago.

Meanwhile, Shankar stopped going home after his marriage with the minor girl and a complaint in this regard was lodged with the All Women Police Station at Thirumangalam then itself.

He was summoned and interrogated during which he agreed to break the marriage with the minor girl and to live with Mahalakshmi.

However, he did not live up to his word as he rented a house for the minor girl and was living with her.

The first wife who went to the minor girl’s house was thrashed by the girl’s mother and brother recently and sustained grievous injuries.

An aggrieved Mahalakshmi lodged a complaint with Koyambedu Police station. However, no action was taken on the complaint.

The first wife then lodged a fresh complaint with Thirumangalam AWPS, where a case was registered.

All three involved in the case were summoned by inspector Fravin Dani for interrogation.

Shankar, his mother-in-law and brother-in-law, were arrested under the provisions of Prevention of Child Marriage Act and were remanded to Judicial Custody by a Magistrate in the City. All the three were lodged in Puzhal Prison.
