16-Year-Old Bihar Girl's Marriage Bid Foiled

CHENNAI: Officials of ChildLine stopped the marriage of a minor girl, after they were alerted by a neighbour at Anna Nagar on Sunday.

Officials said the family, from Bihar and settled in the city, had made arrangements for the wedding of a 16-year-old girl after discontinuing her studies.

The girl, whose marriage with a relative was to take place on Sunday, was not in favour of the union. “On Friday, there was a pre-marriage ritual in the house. As the girl refused to participate in it, her mother and the groom beat up her. A neighbour, on hearing the cries of the girl, called the helpline,” said an official. The officials rescued the girl and took her to a children’s home after she was produced before the Child Welfare Committee.

Two women were found dead under suspicious circumstances in different places in Kancheepuram on Sunday. Police said that the partially burnt body of an unidentified womanfound in Paruthikulam, while body of Bhavani (38), of Sirivakkam village, was found at a deserted spot.
