Civic Body Member Held on Theft Charge

CHENNAI: A panchayat councillor from Ambur, in Vellore district was arrested in Chennai on Sunday, when police found that he was involved in a series of incidents where he posed as a Metro Water board official and conned women of their gold jewellery.

Police said Vijay (29), ward councillor in the Ambu Panchayat Union, was nabbed during a vehicle check along with his accomplice Ganeshan (31), who was the husband of a ward councillor in the same panchayat union.

“We were investigating a series of similar incidents, where men posed as Metro Water officials and approached women who were alone in their houses in Velchery, Adambakkam and Alandur areas. We had the photo of the accused from a CCTV camera recordings near the house of one of the victims,” said a police officer.

However, police said they are not sure which party they belonged to. Police identified one of the victims as Sremathi, a resident of TNGO Colony, from whom the duo stole jewellery worth about `2 lakh  on May 30.

“There were similar cases reported in other stations. We are investigating the case,” said the officer.
