CHENNAI: A 41-year-old man was arrested on the charge of torturing his stepson with a razor blade, causing bleeding injuries in his stomach and genitals, at Tirutani on Wednesday.

Police said the accused S Baskaran, working as a distributor with a paint company, had assaulted the boy when he was alone in the house on Tuesday.

The victim’s mother, a differently-abled sanitary worker, had gone out for work when the incident took place. She was living with Baskaran for last few years after her husband’s death. The victim and another child that she had from her previous marriage were also living with Baskaran in the house.

“It seems that the accused had assaulted the boy suspecting the woman was getting closer with another person,” said a police officer.

“He had indiscriminately scratched the blade on the boy causing bleeding injuries in the stomach and genitals. However, the boy is out of danger. He was rescued by the neighbours on hearing his cries,” police said.

Baskaran was booked under different sections and remanded for judicial custody by a court.

The traumatised boy is still under treatment at the Tirutani government hospital. Child protection officials are monitoring the condition of the child. “Officials of the Dsitrict Child Protection Unit have visited the boy. Once the child gets discharged, we will examine the family conditions and decide how to ensure the child’s protection,” said a Tiruvallur district Child Welfare Committee member.
