CHENNAI: Bai Lou, a two-day exhibition of handwoven saris and dupattas opened at Ushas Gallery, Nungambakkam on Friday. The exhibition was inaugurated by Usha Raghunathan, the owner of the boutique.

The exhibition comprises a wide range of cotton, matka silks, linen, resham silks and khadi textures in vibrant hues of soothing greens, pleasant greys, oranges, reds and earthy tones.

With mild zari thread-work, border workplain designs, stripes and checks, the fabrics on display are a visual treat.

Bappaditya Biswas, the organiser, of the exhibition says, “The quality is because of the blend of natural fibres employed. Previously, the collection was part of the Crafts Council, but this is the first time we are having a solo show in the city.”

Bai Lou, which covers the work of close to 1,000 handloom weavers, employs the skills of dhoti weavers and muslin weavers.

“The skills used are traditional, while its implementation is our interpretation,” adds Biswas, who has been in the textile business for 12 years.

(The expo is on till June 28 at Ushas Gallery, Dr Thirumurthi Nagar. For details, call 28254035)
