Elephant Calf Finds New Home in Zoo

CHENNAI : A female elephant calf, which was found abandoned in Panthakalam rock area in Thodalimaalai Saragam within the Kilamalai Reserved Forest of Kaliyal Range, Kanyakumari, recently, has been brought to Arignar Anna Zoological Park. The calf was just a week old at the time of rescue and was probably  separated from its natal herd due to excessive sound and light of crackers during Deepavali. Efforts to reunite the elephant calf with its herd failed, and hence it was decided that the calf be shifted to the Vandalur zoo. The calf is now housed inside a specially-constructed enclosure inside the elephant moat, and will be monitored by zoo vets till she gets stabilised, according to a statement from KSSVP Reddy, director, AAZP.
