Database of Polytechnic Projects Soon

CHENNAI: Buying readymade assembled pieces and paying experts to get their project work done will no longer be easy for polytechnic students. In a bid to streamline the projects and to make the best use of those that have been developed, the Directorate of Technical Education is embarking on a humongous task of creating a database of all the projects undertaken by students of polytechnic colleges.

“As of now we have no idea about what is being done as projects in the colleges. The database calls for approval of the project and a clear understanding of the work that is going on. Once this is developed we might even be able to select some of the good projects and put them to use,” said Commissioner of Technical Education Kumar Jayant.

The compiling of the database is to begin in October. To facilitate the process, the Department of Technical Education has already set in motion the process of setting up Student Project Monitoring Committees. Each of these committees will approve the projects of students in about 15 polytechnic colleges.

The panels will be headed by principals of select polytechnics. The members will include one faculty from civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer engineering from government or government-aided colleges. One more member can be appointed for minor branches if the institutions under the committee have such courses.

The committee will be responsible for scrutinising the list of projects by students by going through their proposals and sending an approved list with comments and suggestions.  The committee will also ascertain the use of readymade projects, projects with heavy economical burden to parents, etc., and to ensure that there is enough staff guidance for the project.
